What’s new for SQL Server 2019 Analysis Services RC1
We are excited to announce RC1 of SQL Server 2019 Analysis Services (SSAS 2019). The SSAS 2019 release is now feature complete! We may still make performance improvements for the RTM release. RC1 introduces the following features: Custom ordering of calculation items in calculation groups Query interleaving with short query bias for high concurrency workloads Online attach for optimized synchronization of read-only replicas SuperDAXMD for improved performance of Power BI reports over SSAS multidimensional Governance setting to control Power BI cache refreshes

As we rolled out the preview of Shared Datasets and the new Build permission, we received feedback that our limitations on export of summarized data from a visual are overly restrictive. We are adjusting our approach based on your feedback. Specifically, we will allow users with the Read permission to export summarized data from a visual.

Our August release has another hotly anticipated feature from the Microsoft Business Application Summit, grouping. Grouping in reports, similar to PowerPoint’s grouping, lets you easily organize groups of visuals to move and resize them as a set. This month’s release also has some updates to our newest features, such as a icon set picker for our newly added icons conditional formatting and measure support for key influencers.

Five new Power BI Premium Capacity settings are available in the portal , preloaded with default values. Admin can review and override the defaults with their preference to better protect their capacity from running into issues and avoid problems before they arise.

The volume of data is growing at an ever-increasing rate. As it grows, so does the value to the companies that are able to unlock insights from it. Power BI is all about helping organizations embrace a data culture, where every user can make better decisions based on data big and small, no matter where that data is coming from Providing users a way to do analysis over large volumes of data has traditionally been challenging. Large volumes require extra compute power and specialized skills to effectively model and analyze. To unblock users, organizations have often relied on transforming big datasets into smaller, more manageable datasets, which can then be analyzed using traditional BI reporting and visualization tools. When data is transformed from big to small, the details of the data tend to get lost as dimensionality is traded away for size and performance. While insights are lost, management complexity and costs grow as development teams work to populate these multiple smaller datasets.
